The US central bank cut borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Move Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve
The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes
In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”
Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed usually studies BLS data to determine employment trends, including the count of employment gains created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.
The number of jobs created to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown
Though BLS was set to release last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its release when the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that indicated that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
