The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's selection chief the selector has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches kicking off on 21 November in Perth.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of being involved.

"We know that the clock is ticking and there are permutations at play, not just the back issue, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he's going to play a key capacity. Ideally starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of back injuries, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of three Australian summers in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against India as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "slight concern and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games regardless. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
